1983年3月3日，國(guó)務(wù)院批準(zhǔn)成立省轄瀘州市，下轄市中區(qū)和瀘縣、納溪縣、合江縣。1985年6月4日，國(guó)務(wù)院決定將敘永縣、古藺縣劃歸瀘州市管轄。

1996年7月1日，瀘州市行政區(qū)劃調(diào)整，設(shè)江陽(yáng)區(qū)、龍馬潭區(qū)、納溪區(qū)和瀘縣、合江縣、敘永縣、古藺縣，市政府駐瀘州市江陽(yáng)區(qū)大山坪。全市轄區(qū)面積1.22萬(wàn)平方千米。

瀘州為川南要沖，巴蜀門戶，處于川、滇、黔、渝4省市結(jié)合部“金三角”地帶，地理上控扼兩江（長(zhǎng)江、沱江）、“兩河”（赤水河、永寧河），自古以來(lái)就為鎖鑰一方的關(guān)隘重地；依托其自然地理，瀘州人民繁衍生息2000多年，使瀘州成為國(guó)家版圖中兼具自然個(gè)性、文化個(gè)性地區(qū)。
